Lead Yourself Well ~ You Won't Grow By Accident

March 06, 20263 min read

Intentional leadership develoment matter. Leadership rarely grows by accident.

Many people find themselves in leadership because they care, because they are capable, or because someone trusted them with responsibility. Yet once they begin leading, very few are given the time or space to intentionally develop.

That’s why an important question every leader should ask is:

How can I continue to grow as a leader?

Leadership development doesn’t happen simply by holding a position. It happens through reflection, learning, honest conversations and a willingness to keep growing.

Leadership Is More Than Experience

Experience certainly shapes leadership, but experience alone does not guarantee growth.

It’s possible to lead for years and still carry the same habits, the same assumptions and the same blind spots. Growth happens when leaders take time to reflect on how they lead, why they lead that way and what kind of leader they are becoming.

As John C. Maxwell famously said:

“Leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less.”

If leadership is influence, then growth in leadership means growing in the way we influence people. That influence is shaped by our character, our awareness of others, and the intentional decisions we make as leaders.

The Power of Coaching Conversations

Leadership can be surprisingly lonely.

Leaders are often expected to provide clarity, direction and encouragement for others, but they rarely have a place where they can process their own leadership honestly.

This is where coaching conversations can be incredibly valuable.

They create space for leaders to think out loud, reflect on challenges and gain clarity about what matters most. Sometimes the conversation focuses on purpose and direction. At other times, it centres on setting goals, strengthening influence or navigating difficult leadership situations.

Often, the most valuable part is simply having someone ask thoughtful questions that help you see your leadership more clearly.

Growing in Self-Awareness

One of the most important qualities of an effective leader is self-awareness.

Leaders who understand their values, recognise their strengths and acknowledge their limitations tend to lead with greater clarity and consistency. They also tend to build stronger relationships with the people they lead.

Intentional leadership development helps leaders explore questions such as:

  • What motivates the way I lead?

  • What kind of leader am I becoming?

  • How does my leadership affect the people around me?

  • What values shape the decisions I make?

Leaders who grow in self-awareness often grow in influence as well.

Developing Leaders Within Teams

Leadership development is not only about personal growth. It also shapes the culture of a team or organisation.

Healthy teams make leadership development part of their culture. They create environments where people are encouraged to grow, where responsibility is shared and where emerging leaders are supported as they develop their influence.

When leaders intentionally develop other leaders, something powerful happens. Confidence grows, ownership increases, and the whole team becomes stronger.

Leadership Is a Journey

No leader ever finishes developing.

Every new season of leadership brings fresh challenges, new opportunities and new lessons to learn. The most effective leaders recognise that leadership is not simply a role they hold, but a journey they continue to walk.

Intentional development through reflection, coaching, learning and conversation simply creates the space for that growth to happen.

Remember, leadership is not just about leading well today. It’s about continuing to grow into the kind of leader people are willing to follow.
