Trust God Before Clarity Comes

May 22, 20262 min read

One of the biggest struggles leaders face is the pressure to appear confident, decisive, and certain at all times. We want clarity before obedience. We want the full picture before we move.

The current posts focus on the idea of leading from behind as a powerful way to lead, and how it helps make you a leader worth following. Plus, I would love to hear from you by responding to the question at the end. Thanks

Throughout Scripture, God rarely works that way.

Before Jesus ever told His disciples to lead, in Matthew 4:19, He said, “Follow me”. Leadership begins with surrender long before it becomes influence.

In Experiencing God, the author Henry Blackaby describes what he calls a “crisis of belief.” This is the moment where faith stops being theoretical and requires some action. It is the place where you either stay where it feels safe, or trust God enough to move forward without full certainty.

This tension forms leaders.

Moses did not feel ready. Gideon doubted himself. Peter failed publicly.

Yet God still invited them forward. What made them significant was not confidence in themselves, but trust in God.

As Corrie Ten Boom once said,

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

Leading from behind is not passive leadership. It is surrendered leadership. It means, as a leader, we listen before reacting, remain teachable, and refuse to build leadership around ego or appearance.

People trust leaders who clearly follow something bigger than themselves.

This is why some of the strongest leaders are not the loudest or most certain. They are the ones who stay grounded, prayerful, humble, and are willing to take the next faithful step.

Put it another way:

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

Where in your life or leadership are you waiting for certainty, when God may simply be asking for your next faithful step?
